Happy or Sad, Invoke Allāh

Happy or SadInvoke Allāh

˜|

The blessed Prophet (upon him and his family salutations and peace) has been narrated to have said, “If it makes one happy that Allāh answers their prayers in their times of hardship and restlessness, then one should pray, excessively, when they are in a state of happiness as well.”[1]

In the aforementioned ḥadīth, the blessed Prophet (upon him and his family salutations and peace) informs us of a great secret which concerns the acceptance of a duʿā. Of course, it is now up to us as individuals to taste the fruit for ourselves. The most important thing we are being told here is that we must not forget Allāh just because we are experiencing happiness and are enjoying our wealth as it is from Him that all this happiness comes from. In fact, not invoking Allāh in good times actually becomes a means of delay, or even rejection, when one is truly in need. Furthermore, forgetting Allāh when you are content in life and then only remembering Him when you are needy is an act of shamelessness.[2]  Allāh’s Mercy outstretches His wrath, and although He is not in need of our sense of shame, Allāh is indeed angered by selfish and self obsessive characteristics. Allāh says in the Qur’ān [10:12], “When harm touches man, he calls on Us, lying on his side or sitting down or standing up. Then when We remove the harm from him he carried on as if he had never called on Us when the harm first touched him [...]. Allāh further says, Qur’ān [39:8], “When harm touches man he calls upon his Lord, repenting to Him. Then when He grants him a blessing from Him, he forgets what he was calling for and ascribes rivals from His Way. Say, “Enjoy your unbelief for a little while. You are amongst the Companions of the Fire.””

When someone is in the habit of making duʿā to the Almighty when they are at peace in life, He rewards them when they are in a state of despair, by swiftly accepting their prayers and alleviating their problems. So, what is important to consider here, is that success lies in invoking Allāh not only when one is in need of it but also when one is happy and content in life.
